Q&A

What is Hypnosis and is it safe?

Hypnosis is a state in which the two minds, the conscious and subconscious, come together in focus. This unique alignment allows for deeper access to the subconscious, facilitating positive changes and personal growth.

We frequently enter trance states throughout the day, such as when driving, reading, or washing dishes. In these relaxed moments, our conscious awareness shifts, resembling daydreaming, allowing the unconscious mind to absorb helpful suggestions and thoughts.

Trance is a very natural and safe state. Contrary to what you might see on the television, trance is not mind-control!

When we are in a trance state we are still in control, and we process and decide whether information or suggestions are useful to us or not and will not accept or do anything against our will. This is why Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be so beneficial, because it combines powerful solution focused discussions, followed by encouraging a relaxing trance state so that the ideas and solutions discussed can then be explored and utilised by the brain for positive benefit.

How is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy different to other types of hypnotherapies?

Unlike other forms of therapy, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses a specific structure, which incorporates aspects of Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive behavioural therapy and Neuro-linguistic programming. As well as providing the client of an understanding of how the brain works, in combination with using trance.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is also different because it doesn’t require the therapist to ‘dig into’ a person’s past, as this is not deemed necessary to help the person formulate plans and best hopes for how they want to move forward in their lives in the future.

How does Hypnotherapy Work?

Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind, which influences most of our thoughts, actions, and choices. Many people don't realise this, but our brains are designed to operate mostly on autopilot to avoid overthinking and exhaustion. This understanding leads us to recognise that solutions to our challenges also lie within the subconscious, alongside our habits.

The REM (Rapid Eye Movement) state is considered important in hypnosis because it's the brain state where dreaming occurs, and hypnosis can create a deep trance that supports REM sleep:

Memory and learning

REM sleep helps consolidate memories and process new information.

Mental health

REM sleep is associated with better mental health and mood regulation.

Brain health

REM sleep helps the brain rest and repair itself.

Creativity

REM sleep is associated with higher creativity because it allows the brain to associate new experiences with other things you know.

Immune system

REM sleep is associated with a stronger immune system

Attention focus

Focusing attention is similar to being absorbed in a dream.
